Lecture 5

Madrasat al-Arqam — Phase 1 — Day 9 of the Program ("Lecture 5 First Half" in curriculum labeling)

Sheikh Aḥmad al-Sayyid · al-Majlis al-Khāmis · Zaman al-Biʿthah al-Nabawiyyah

ⓘ Note on the curriculum's "First Half / Second Half" labels: The Madrasat al-Arqam curriculum bundles the bidʾ al-waḥy unit across two program-days, calling them "First Half" (Day 9) and "Second Half" (Day 10). But these correspond to two separate Sheikh-sessions: this file covers Majlis 5 (the first ~1h32m video). For Majlis 6 — the Sheikh's continuation, which the curriculum labels Day 10 / Second Half — see Sirah_Lecture_06_Day10.md.

Note on Arabic ḥadīth: From this lecture onward, every Arabic ḥadīth, athar, and prophetic-saying block is followed by an English Transliteration and Translation to make the chain easier to study, recite, and reference.

Where We Are in the Series

This is the opening lecture of the post-biʿthah portion — and the Sheikh frames it as a watershed:

"The sīrah in its most specific sense (bi-l-maʿnā al-akhaṣṣ) begins from the biʿthah. While the sīrah in its general, customary sense — as found in the sīrah books — begins from the birth, and even before that with the conditions of the Arabs and the lineage of the Prophet ﷺ."

Everything before this — the elephant, the noble birth, shepherding the sheep, the marriage to Khadījah, Ḥilf al-Fuḍūl, the Black Stone arbitration — was tamhīd (preparation). Now we enter what those tamhīdāt were preparing for:

"If those great matters were merely preparation for the biʿthah, then the biʿthah is greater than all of them — it is the supreme, magnificent affair."

Methodological Preamble — Our Reading Plan Going Forward

Primary text

From this lecture onward, the reading will be primarily from Sīrat Ibn Hishām (the previous lectures sampled it; now we read from it continuously, while still drawing on other sources).

Essential parallel sources

Source	Author	Why
al-Bidāyah wa-l-Nihāyah (sīrah section)	Ibn Kathīr	The Sheikh gives this enormous praise: "This book has perhaps not been given its full due in the sīrah." Ibn Kathīr gathers everything — even the rare and scattered narrations — but is hard to use as a primary continuous read because he piles roots and chains.
al-Rawḍ al-Unuf	al-Suhaylī	Commentary on Ibn Hishām, dictated imlāʾan (orally).
Sharḥ al-Aḥādīth al-Nabawiyyah	Various — especially Fatḥ al-Bārī	For the long ḥadīths of bidʾ al-waḥy etc., Ibn Hishām's own comments or al-Suhaylī's may be insufficient. Fatḥ is essential.
Tafāsīr	Various — especially al-Ṭabarī and Ibn ʿĀshūr	For verses that intersect sīrah events (e.g. the verse on the age of 40, naqshat al-layl, etc.)

The Sheikh's note on level

"I was thinking — does this Madrasah suit absolute beginners in Islamic studies? Honestly: it's not suited to the complete beginner. The Madrasah is light in time, but in the depth of treatment — the careful handling of sīrah-affairs, the sources, the references, the various levels of reform-benefit — it's at a somewhat advanced level."

"For the beginner: skip what you don't yet grasp and continue building on what you do. Do not let what you don't yet understand become an obstacle to continuing."

Part 1 — The Age of 40: More Than Just a Number

Ibn Isḥāq opens:

"فلما بلغ محمد رسول الله ﷺ أربعين سنة، بعثه الله رحمةً للعالمين، وكافةً للناس..."

The Sheikh pauses on two distinct questions:

Verifying the Prophet's age at biʿthah (the famous 40 — though the masāʾil-books record other reports too).
What does the Qurʾān's mention of "40" signify? This is the deeper question, because Allāh Himself named this specific age in His Book.

The verse-anchor

"حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ وَبَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً قَالَ رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِي أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَى وَالِدَيَّ..." (al-Aḥqāf 15)

The question: Is al-Ashudd identical to the 40 mentioned in the same verse, or are they two distinct things?

The majority view: they are distinct (mughāyarah)

Ibn ʿĀshūr's two linguistic proofs:

Repetition of the verb "balaġa" — "بلغ أشده وبلغ أربعين سنة" — the doubling argues against pure taʾkīd.
The conjunction "wa" — "the conjunction implies tagāyur": the connected items must differ from one another.

But — they are deeply linked (an overlap, not a separation)

Ibn ʿĀshūr's nuance:

al-Ashudd is not a fixed age — it is "a state of intensification of the mental and physical powers."
"Its time is what is after 30, and its completion is at 40."
So "the biʿthah at 40" means: the Prophet ﷺ reached his complete maturity (kamāl al-ashudd) at this moment.
Parallels the other Qurʾānic phrase about Mūsā: "وَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ وَاسْتَوَى" — al-Ṭabarī via Mujāhid: bulūgh al-ashudd = 33, istiwāʾ = bulūgh al-arbaʿīn.

al-Ṭabarī's beautiful linguistic argument for proximity

The Arabs, when they conjoin two ages or measures with wa-, place them in close proximity:

"إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدْنَى مِنْ ثُلُثَيِ اللَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُ" — two-thirds and half are close. You wouldn't say "you stand for less than a moment of the night, and all of it."

"أَخَذْتُ عَامَّةَ مَالِي أَوْ كُلَّهُ" — most of my wealth or all — close. You wouldn't say "a little or all of it."

"So coupling 'وبلغ أربعين سنة' with 'بلغ أشده' is most fitting and resembling when one is intended to bring them close — not when there's a gap of 15 or 20 years."

The Sheikh's reform-takeaway — age has a function

"The Prophet ﷺ was not sent at 15, 20, 25 — nor in the middle of the 30s. Was this intentional? Yes — absolutely. It is from Allāh's ḥikmah that He chose him at exactly this moment."

A muṣliḥ should reckon with the age-cycle:

Stage	Implication
Beginning of bulūgh al-ashudd (~30s)	Mental and physical powers begin their intensification — invest here in substantial reform-projects that demand mind and body.
Tamām al-ashudd (~40)	Peak — by Allāh's mention in His Book, this is a station of completion.
Post-40	Mental may continue rising; physical typically begins gradual decline. Not absolute — but to be reckoned with.

This intersects psychology, medicine, social sciences — but especially the iṣlāḥī and daʿawī domain: the man bearing weight should know where he is in the age-cycle.

Part 2 — Tarīkh al-Biʿthah: A Hidden Reconciliation Behind the "10 vs 13 Years at Makkah"

Ibn Kathīr records the famous report of al-Shaʿbī (tābiʿī, narrator from ~500 Companions), with ṣaḥīḥ isnād to him:

"The Prophet ﷺ received nubuwwah at 40. Then Isrāfīl was coupled with his nubuwwah for three years — teaching him a kalimah or a thing, but no Qurʾān was sent down. After three years, Jibrīl was coupled with him, and the Qurʾān descended on his tongue for 20 years — 10 at Makkah, 10 at Madīnah. He died at 63."

Ibn Ḥajar's reconciling reading (Fatḥ al-Bārī)

"It is not that the three-year fatrah meant the absence of Jibrīl's coming entirely (between Iqraʾ and Yā ayyuhā al-muddaththir) — but rather that the Qurʾān's descent was delayed."

Putting this together:

Onset of nubuwwah via dreams = his birth month, Rabīʿ al-Awwal, after completing 40.
(al-Bayhaqī: the dream-phase was 6 months.)
Onset of waḥy in yaqẓah = Ramaḍān (the Iqraʾ moment).
The 3 years of al-Shaʿbī = the period before continuous Qurʾānic revelation, which would correspond to / encompass the fatrat al-waḥy.

"On this view, the apparent conflict between reports — '10 years at Makkah' (in Bukhārī) vs '13 years at Makkah' (the more famous) — could be reconciled by whether one counts the fatrah period or not."

The Sheikh's bottom line

Question	Answer
The Prophet ﷺ's age at biʿthah	40 (certain — jumhūr)
Was there a fatrat al-waḥy?	Yes (ijmāʿ + naṣṣ ṣaḥīḥ)
How long was the fatrah?	Disputed. Could be 3 years (per al-Shaʿbī's mursal); or shorter — Ibn Ḥajar inclines toward something less when the dreams phase is reckoned.

⚠️ "al-Shaʿbī's report is mursal — albeit a high-grade thābit one. We cannot say it is conclusively decisive."

Part 3 — The Three Reports of Bidʾ al-Waḥy in Ibn Hishām

Curiously, Ibn Isḥāq did not give the full ʿĀʾishah narration. He arranged three reports:

Report 1 — The opening fragment of ʿĀʾishah's ḥadīth

Ibn Isḥāq → al-Zuhrī → ʿUrwah → ʿĀʾishah

"إن أول ما ابتدئ به رسول الله ﷺ من النبوة، حين أراد الله كرامته ورحمة العباد به: الرؤيا الصادقة. لا يرى رسول الله ﷺ رؤيا في نومه إلا جاءت كفلق الصبح. قالت: وحبب الله إليه الخلوة، فلم يكن شيء أحب إليه من أن يخلو وحده ﷺ."

Transliteration: "Inna awwala mā ubtudiʾa bihi Rasūlu llāhi ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama mina-n-nubuwwah, ḥīna arāda llāhu karāmatahu wa-raḥmata-l-ʿibādi bih: al-ruʾyā al-ṣādiqah. Lā yarā Rasūlu llāhi ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama ruʾyā fī nawmihi illā jāʾat ka-falaqi-ṣ-ṣubḥ. Qālat: wa-ḥubbiba llāhu ilayhi al-khalwah, fa-lam yakun shayʾun aḥabba ilayhi min an yakhluwa waḥdahu ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam."

Translation: "Verily, the first thing with which the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ was begun from prophethood — when Allāh willed his honoring and mercy to His servants through him — was the truthful dream. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ would not see a dream in his sleep except that it came like the breaking of dawn. She [ʿĀʾishah] said: 'And Allāh made seclusion beloved to him — there was nothing more beloved to him than to be alone, ﷺ.'"

That's all — Ibn Isḥāq stops there.

Report 2 — The intervening fragment (taslīm of stones and trees)

Ibn Isḥāq → ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿAbdillāh b. Abī Sufyān al-Thaqafī (وكان واعية) → "some people of knowledge"

Transliteration: "Inna Rasūla llāhi ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama ḥīna arādahu llāhu taʿālā bi-karāmatihi wa-btadaʾahu bi-n-nubuwwah, kāna idhā kharaja li-ḥājatihi abʿada ḥattā taḥsura ʿanhu-l-buyūtu wa-yufḍiya ilā shiʿābi Makkata wa-buṭūni awdiyatihā. Fa-lā yamurru Rasūlu llāhi ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama bi-ḥajarin wa-lā shajaratin illā qāla: 'as-Salāmu ʿalayka yā Rasūlallāh.' Fa-yaltafitu Rasūlu llāhi ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama ḥawlahu ʿan yamīnihi wa-shimālihi wa-khalfihi, fa-lā yarā illā ash-shajara wa-l-ḥijārah. Fa-makatha Rasūlu llāhi ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama kadhālika yarā wa-yasmaʿu mā shāʾa llāhu an yamkutha, thumma jāʾahu Jibrīlu ʿalayhi-s-salām bi-mā jāʾahu min karāmati llāhi taʿālā wa-huwa bi-Ḥirāʾ fī shahri Ramaḍān."

Translation: "When Allāh willed for the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ His honoring and began him with prophethood, whenever he went out for his need he would go far — until the houses fell away from him and he reached the ravines of Makkah and the bellies of its valleys. He would not pass any stone or tree except that it said: 'Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allāh.' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ would turn around him — to his right, his left, and behind him — and see only trees and stones. He remained in this state, seeing and hearing what Allāh willed him to remain, until Jibrīl ﷺ came to him with what came to him of Allāh's honoring, while he was at Ḥirāʾ in the month of Ramaḍān."

Where does this report sit in Ibn Isḥāq's 5-tier evidence framework?

⚠️ This is the framework we tracked in Lectures 3-4 — and the Sheikh actually quizzed us on it here:

Tier	What it covers	Strength
1	Reports musnad and ṣaḥīḥ, corroborated through other channels	Strongest
2	Reports musnad ṣaḥīḥ, only via Ibn Isḥāq's channel	Strong
3	Mursalāt of kibār al-tābiʿīn and their like (e.g. ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr) — also where most mursalāt of "average tābiʿīn" sit, when nothing in them is munkar	Acceptable / strong-ish
4	Reports from Ibn Isḥāq's own shuyūkh when the shaykh is unknown (majhūl) — like this report from a Thaqafī shaykh of his quoting "بعض أهل العلم"	Weak-to-moderate
5	Balāghāt and mursalāt of Ibn Isḥāq himself	Weakest in detail; but strong when they are general extracted summaries (mustakhlaṣāt) about the contours of the sīrah

This report (about stones/trees) falls into Tier 4 — not strong enough as a detailed event, but compatible with the well-attested ḥadīth in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim:

"إني لأعرف حجراً كان يسلم عليّ بمكة، إني لأعرفه الآن."

Transliteration: "Innī la-aʿrifu ḥajaran kāna yusallimu ʿalayya bi-Makkah, innī la-aʿrifuhu-l-ān."

Translation: "Verily, I know a stone that used to salute me in Makkah — verily, I know it even now."

Report 3 — The long narrative

Ibn Isḥāq → Wahb b. Kaysān (mawlā āl al-Zubayr) → ʿAbdullāh b. al-Zubayr → ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr al-Laythī

The very fact this exists is itself a lesson worth its own section.

Part 4 — A Lesson in How to Handle Mursal: The Status of ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr

A young Companion (ʿAbdullāh b. al-Zubayr) is asking a tābiʿī (ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr) to narrate the story of bidʾ al-waḥy — and ʿUbayd narrates it confidently in his presence.

"This scene demolishes much of the surface-level handling of some hadith-rules — the kind of approach that treats every mursal as one undifferentiated category to be thrown together into the 'weak / far' pile."

Who was ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr?

Born in the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ. (al-Bukhārī even ascribes him a rūʾyah — sight of the Prophet ﷺ — which technically meets the definition of ṣaḥābī. But the established view of most scholars is that he is a tābiʿī, of the kibār al-tābiʿīn.)
A qāṣṣ of Makkah (preacher / wāʿiẓ) — and Ibn ʿUmar himself attended his gatherings. This is enormous tazkiyah: "Ibn ʿUmar does not just attend anyone."
Thābit al-Bunānī said: "The first one to do qaṣaṣ in Makkah was ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr — in the time of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb." A wāʿiẓ approved in ʿUmar's era is an extremely high zakāh.
Died only a few days before Ibn ʿUmar.

The methodological payoff

*"The benefit of knowing this report is mursal is not to reject it — it is to know that if it ever conflicts with the musnad ṣaḥīḥ, we prefer the musnad ṣaḥīḥ without negotiation."*

So:

The primary, authoritative report of bidʾ al-waḥy must be ʿĀʾishah's narration in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (also in Muslim — muttafaq ʿalayhi).
ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr's longer narrative is acceptable on the whole, and we gain real benefit from its additional details — but where there is conflict, ʿĀʾishah's account wins.

Part 5 — ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr's Long Narrative (Selected, with the Sheikh's Annotations)

The full passage is long — here are the elements added over ʿĀʾishah's account, with the Sheikh's commentary:

(a) The annual seclusion at Ḥirāʾ — a defined practice

"كان رسول الله ﷺ يجاور في حراء من كل سنة شهراً — وكان ذلك مما تحنث به قريش في الجاهلية."

Transliteration: "Kāna Rasūlu llāhi ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama yujāwiru fī Ḥirāʾ min kulli sanatin shahran — wa-kāna dhālika mimmā tataḥannathu bihi Qurayshun fī-l-jāhiliyyah."

Translation: "The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ used to seclude himself at Ḥirāʾ for a month every year — and this was among what Quraysh used to perform as taḥannuth in the jāhiliyyah."

This is not in ʿĀʾishah's narration — it's a unique gain from ʿUbayd's report:

The Prophet ﷺ would seclude himself at Ḥirāʾ one month every year.
This was a practice of tahannuth — Ibn Isḥāq glosses: "al-tahannuth = al-tabarrur" (seeking righteousness).

(b) The linguistic side-note — tahannuth ↔ tahannuf

Ibn Hishām adds:

"The Arabs say al-tahannuth and al-tahannuf — they intend al-ḥanīfiyyah, swapping the fāʾ for the thāʾ. Just as they say jadath and jadaf for grave; just as Ibn Kathīr added: fūmuhā and thūmuhā (garlic) — both attested."

So tahannuth was a remnant of the ḥanīfī devotion — what survived in pure form from the religion of Ibrāhīm ﷺ.

(c) Feeding the poor during the retreat

"يطعم من جاءه من المساكين."

Ḥirāʾ was a known place where the mukhtalifīn / devotional seekers would withdraw — and Abū Ṭālib's verse confirms this:

وثَوْرٍ ومن أرسى ثبيراً مكانه ورَاقٍ ليرقى في حِراءَ ونازلِ

So Ḥirāʾ was an established locus of devotional retreat in Quraysh's broader culture.

(d) The crucial difference — "وأنا نائم"

In ʿUbayd's narration:

"قال رسول الله ﷺ: فجاءني وأنا نائم بنمط من ديباج فيه كتاب، فقال: اقرأ..."

Transliteration: "Qāla Rasūlu llāhi ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam: 'Fa-jāʾanī wa-anā nāʾim bi-namaṭin min dībājin fīhi kitāb, fa-qāla: Iqraʾ...'"

Translation: "The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'He came to me while I was asleep with a brocade-cloth on which was a writing, and he said: Read…'"

This is the major divergence from ʿĀʾishah's account, which clearly has Jibrīl coming in yaqẓah (wakefulness) — "fa-jāʾahu-l-Malaku fa-qāla: Iqraʾ" ("the Angel came to him and said: Read") — in a fully waking, embodied encounter.

(e) The exterior vision after the cave

"حتى إذا كنت في وسط من الجبل سمعت صوتاً من السماء يقول: يا محمد، أنت رسول الله وأنا جبريل. قال: فرفعت رأسي إلى السماء أنظر، فإذا جبريل في صورة رجل صافٍّ قدميه في أفق السماء... فما زلت واقفاً ما أتقدم أمامي وما أرجع ورائي حتى بعثت خديجة رسلها في طلبي..."

Transliteration: "Ḥattā idhā kuntu fī wasaṭin mina-l-jabal samiʿtu ṣawtan mina-s-samāʾi yaqūl: 'Yā Muḥammad, anta Rasūlu llāhi wa-anā Jibrīl.' Qāla: fa-rafaʿtu raʾsī ilā-s-samāʾi anẓur, fa-idhā Jibrīlu fī ṣūrati rajulin ṣāffin qadamayhi fī ufuqi-s-samāʾ… fa-mā ziltu wāqifan mā ataqaddamu amāmī wa-mā arjiʿu warāʾī ḥattā baʿathat Khadījatu rusulahā fī ṭalabī…"

Translation: "Until, when I was in the middle of the mountain, I heard a voice from the sky saying: 'O Muḥammad! You are the Messenger of Allāh and I am Jibrīl.' He said: 'So I raised my head to the sky to look — and there was Jibrīl in the form of a man standing with his feet straddling the horizon of the sky.' … 'I did not cease standing — I could not advance forward and I could not return backward — until Khadījah dispatched her messengers in search of me…'"

This vivid scene of Jibrīl filling the horizon is a genuine addition that complements (rather than contradicts) ʿĀʾishah's account.

(f) Warqah's first declaration — at home

"قال ورقة: قدوس قدوس! والذي نفس ورقة بيده، لئن كنت صدقتني يا خديجة، لقد جاءه الناموس الأكبر الذي كان يأتي موسى عليه السلام، وإنه لنبي هذه الأمة. فقولي له فليثبت."

Transliteration: "Qāla Waraqah: 'Quddūs, Quddūs! Wa-lladhī nafsu Waraqata bi-yadih, la-in kunti ṣaddaqtinī yā Khadījah, la-qad jāʾahu an-Nāmūsu-l-akbar alladhī kāna yaʾtī Mūsā ʿalayhi-s-salām, wa-innahu la-nabiyyu hādhihi-l-ummah. Fa-qūlī lahu fa-l-yathbut.'"

Translation: "Waraqah said: 'Holy! Holy! By the One in whose hand is Waraqah's soul — if you have spoken to me truthfully, O Khadījah, the Greatest Nāmūs (i.e. the angel of revelation who used to bring divine knowledge) has indeed come to him — the same who used to come to Mūsā ﷺ — and verily he is the prophet of this Ummah. So tell him to stand firm.'"

(g) Warqah's second meeting — at the Kaʿbah

"والذي نفسي بيده، إنك لنبي هذه الأمة. ولقد جاءك الناموس الأكبر الذي جاء موسى. ولتكذِّبَنَّه، ولتؤذَيَنّ، ولتُخرَجَنّ، ولتُقاتَلَنّ. ولئن أنا أدركتُ ذلك اليوم لأنصرنّ الله نصراً يعلمه. ثم أدنى رأسه منه فقبّل يافوخه."

Transliteration: "Wa-lladhī nafsī bi-yadih, innaka la-nabiyyu hādhihi-l-ummah. Wa-la-qad jāʾaka an-Nāmūsu-l-akbar alladhī jāʾa Mūsā. Wa-la-tukadhdhabanna, wa-la-tuʾdhayanna, wa-la-tukhrajanna, wa-la-tuqātalanna. Wa-la-in anā adraktu dhālika-l-yawma la-anṣuranna llāha naṣran yaʿlamuh. Thumma adnā raʾsahu minhu fa-qabbala yāfūkhah."

Translation: "By the One in whose hand is my soul — verily you are the prophet of this Ummah. The Greatest Nāmūs has indeed come to you — the same who came to Mūsā. You will most certainly be denied, and harmed, and driven out, and fought. And if I live to reach that day, I will support Allāh's [cause] with a support He knows.' Then he drew his head close to him and kissed the crown of his head."

A visual scene Ibn Hishām preserves that ʿĀʾishah's narration via Bukhārī doesn't transmit — Warqah leaning forward and kissing the crown of the Prophet's ﷺ head.

Part 6 — Reconciling the "sleeping" vs "waking" Encounter

What's definitely true

"There is no doubt and no uncertainty that the waḥy was in yaqẓah — Jibrīl came to the Prophet ﷺ truly and physically while he was at Ḥirāʾ. This is certain."

Two scholarly responses to ʿUbayd's "wa-anā nāʾim"

Path A — al-Jamʿ (reconciliation)

al-Suhaylī (in al-Rawḍ al-Unuf):

"It is possible to combine the two ḥadīths: Jibrīl came to him in the dream before coming in wakefulness — as a tawṭiʾah (preparation) and ease and gentleness for him, because the affair of nubuwwah is tremendous, its burden is heavy, and the human being is weak. And it has been authenticated through the various paths to ʿĀmir al-Shaʿbī that Isrāfīl was coupled with him for three years, appearing to him and bringing him a kalimah of waḥy — then Jibrīl was coupled with him and brought the Qurʾān."

Ibn Ḥajar:

"It is possible that the Angel's coming in yaqẓah was immediately following what had preceded in the manām."

Mughāzī of Mūsā b. ʿUqbah (an early, important source) via al-Zuhrī: explicitly preserves the combined version — manām first, then yaqẓah.

Abū Nuʿaym al-Aṣbahānī cites a mawqūf-grade saying of ʿAlqamah b. Qays:

"إن أول ما يؤتى به الأنبياء في المنام حتى تهدأ قلوبهم، ثم ينزل الوحي بعده."

Transliteration: "Inna awwala mā yuʾtā bihi-l-anbiyāʾu fī-l-manāmi ḥattā tahdaʾa qulūbuhum, thumma yanzilu-l-waḥyu baʿdah."

Translation: "Verily, the first thing the prophets are brought is in the dream — until their hearts become tranquil — then the revelation descends after that."

Ibn Kathīr comments: "This is from the words of ʿAlqamah himself, and it is a good statement — supported by what came before and after."

Abū Shāmah (in his work on the bidʾ al-waḥy ḥadīths) discussed whether this preparatory-dream pattern is specific to the Prophet ﷺ or general to all prophets.

Path B — al-Tarjīḥ (preferring one)

"As for me, I think the second path is stronger — that ʿUbayd's narration contains a wahm (error) in the 'while asleep' element, since it is mursal, and ʿĀʾishah's narration (which is yaqẓah) is preferred."

⚠️ "There is no qaṭʿī (decisive) obstacle to the jamʿ approach — both are reasonable. But by way of tarjīḥ, I lean toward the wahm explanation."

The Sheikh's resolution

Element	Status
Waḥy was in yaqẓah at Ḥirāʾ	Certain.
Jibrīl encounter as in ʿĀʾishah's ḥadīth	Primary, authoritative.
ʿUbayd's "while asleep"	Likely wahm (Sheikh's preference); or possibly a prior dream-phase tawṭiʾah (the jamʿ view, also defensible).
Additional details in ʿUbayd's narration not contradicting ʿĀʾishah	Accepted as additional benefit (the annual month at Ḥirāʾ, feeding the masākīn, the horizon-vision, Warqah at the Kaʿbah).

Part 7 — ʿĀʾishah's Full Narration (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī)

This is the authoritative account the Sheikh read in full:

"Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr narrated to us: Layth narrated to us from ʿUqayl from Ibn Shihāb [al-Zuhrī] from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr from ʿĀʾishah Mother of the Believers, who said:

'The first of what was begun for the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ from revelation was the righteous vision in sleep — he would not see a vision except that it came like the breaking of dawn. Then seclusion was made beloved to him, and he used to seclude himself in the cave of Ḥirāʾ and devote himself there in worship (taʿabbud) for a number of nights, before returning to his family to provision himself for that purpose. Then he would return to Khadījah and provision himself for the like of it. Until the Truth came to him while he was in the cave of Ḥirāʾ.

The Angel came to him and said: 'Read!' He said: 'I am not one who reads.' [The Prophet ﷺ said:] 'So he seized me and squeezed me until I reached exhaustion, then released me and said: Read! I said: I am not one who reads. He seized me and squeezed me a second time until I reached exhaustion, then released me and said: Read! I said: I am not one who reads. He seized me and squeezed me a third time, then released me and said: ﴿Read! In the name of your Lord who created. He created the human from a clinging clot. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous.﴾

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ returned with it, his heart trembling, and entered upon Khadījah bint Khuwaylid (raḍiya llāhu ʿanhā) and said: 'Wrap me up! Wrap me up!' They wrapped him until the terror left him. He said to Khadījah, informing her of the news: 'I have feared for myself.'

Khadījah said: 'Never! By Allāh, Allāh will never disgrace you. Indeed you maintain the ties of kinship, you carry the burden of the weak, you provide for the destitute, you host the guest, and you aid those struck by the calamities of truth.'

So Khadījah set out with him until she brought him to Waraqah ibn Nawfal ibn Asad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā — Khadījah's paternal cousin — who had become a Christian in the jāhiliyyah, and who used to write the Hebrew script, transcribing of the Gospel in Hebrew what Allāh willed him to write. He was an aged sheikh who had become blind.

Khadījah said to him: 'O cousin, listen to your brother's son.' Waraqah said to him: 'O nephew, what do you see?' The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ informed him of the news of what he had seen.

Waraqah said to him: 'This is the Nāmūs (i.e. the angel of revelation, the trusted confidant of divine knowledge) whom Allāh sent down upon Mūsā. Oh, would that I were a strong young man during it! Would that I were alive when your people drive you out!'

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Will they really drive me out?'

He said: 'Yes — no man has ever come with the like of what you have come with except that he was opposed. And if your day reaches me, I will support you with a mighty support.'

Then it was not long before Waraqah died — and the revelation paused.'"

Part 8 — Vocabulary & Phrase Reflections

"كفلق الصبح" — like the cleaving of the dawn

Ibn Ḥajar:

"It was specified by this likeness because of its manifest clarity that allows no doubt — the truth of the dream came with the unambiguous certainty of dawn-light breaking."

"حُبِّبَ إليه الخلاء" / "حَبَّبَ الله إليه الخلوة"

The two versions converge on the same meaning. The passive construction "ḥubbiba ilayhi" still implies Allāh is the One who made it beloved to him — confirmed by the active version in Ibn Isḥāq's al-Zuhrī report: "ثم حبّب الله إليه الخلوة."

Ibn Kathīr on why the love of seclusion:

"The Prophet ﷺ loved seclusion and isolation from his people because of what he saw of their plain misguidance — the worship of idols and prostration to false gods. And his love of seclusion intensified as the time of the waḥy drew near — peace and blessings be upon him."

Part 9 — The Two Layers of Tamhīd Recapped

Tamhīd type	Audience	Examples
For the people (broad, public)	The Arabs and ahl al-kitāb	Bashārāt with the Jews; "يستفتحون على الذين كفروا"; the Year of the Elephant; the Quraysh winters and summers; etc.
For the Prophet ﷺ himself (personal)	His own inner preparation	The distant preparation: all of tarbiyah from birth through his 40 years — shepherding, marriage to Khadījah, Ḥilf al-Fuḍūl, the Black Stone arbitration. The immediate preparation: the dreams as fal q al-ṣubḥ, the salām of stones and trees, and now the annual khalwah at Ḥirāʾ itself.

The Sheikh's frame: "The matter of waḥy is tremendous, heavy — and the human being is weak. Allāh, in His mercy and ḥikmah, prepared His prophet step by step."

Part 10 — The Sheikh's Major Reflection: al-Khalwah

This is the dominant reform-reflection of the lecture — the Sheikh dedicates the entire second half of the lesson to this single theme.

Foundation: khalwah is a ẓarf li-ʿibādah, not ʿibādah itself

*"What ought to be understood from ʿĀʾishah's words 'thumma ḥubbiba ilayhi al-khalāʾ' is that khalwah is not itself a worship — it is a vessel for worship, a context that prepares the heart for a state of devotion and reflection."*

The ʿibādah it makes possible — most prominently — is tafakkur, which is a designated ʿibādah by nṣaṣ.

Why tafakkur needs khalwah

"Not every temporal and spatial context is fit for the achievement of this tafakkur — and even if it is achieved in the wrong context, it is not achieved to the sufficient degree."

The Qurʾān's confirmation — Nāshiʾat al-Layl

"﴿إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ اللَّيْلِ هِيَ أَشَدُّ وَطْئاً وَأَقْوَمُ قِيلاً ۞ إِنَّ لَكَ فِي النَّهَارِ سَبْحاً طَوِيلاً﴾"

The Sheikh reads Ibn ʿĀshūr in depth:

On waṭʾan — two valid readings:

Tamakkun — the worshipper is firmly established (as one wāṭiʾ standing on the ground) in his night-prayer, his mind free of daytime concerns.
Athar — the impact on the heart is stronger and more lasting.

*The kicker — on "إن لك في النهار سبحاً طويلاً":*

"Because the day is a time filled with vast occupation that leaves you no khalwah with yourself. And the Prophet's ﷺ occupation in the daytime was with daʿwah, conveying the Qurʾān, teaching the dīn, debating the mushrikīn, visiting the weak believers. All of this is expressed as sabḥ ṭawīl — a long swimming."

So: the daytime, by Qurʾānic acknowledgment, is structurally hostile to khalwah. The night is where the believer recovers it.

Part 11 — The Contemporary Crisis (The Sheikh's Standout Reflection)

*"How desperately we need a measure of khalwah for tafakkur, taʾammul, dhikr, and ʿibādah — especially in the shadow of a grinding modern life that does not show mercy."*

The problem is deeper than busyness

"The problem with modern life is not just the amount of preoccupation by day and by night — the problem is deeper."

The problem includes:

The design of homes and cities.
The vocational regime life is structured around.
The nature of the demands placed on us.
The openness brought by media and social networks.
Plus the ordinary occupations every human society has had — home, spouse, children, food, livelihood.

The lost rhythm of all human history

"A person — even with their normal occupation — used to return at evening to a house at the edge of a town, or in a village or countryside, and see the sky and its stars as every human throughout all of human history would see the sky and its stars."

"We are the deprived ones. The human being who is deprived of looking at the sky at night is deprived of an enormous good. Perhaps nothing falls upon a reflective person's heart like looking at the sky at night, away from the lights — it has an impact on the soul and the heart that you can rarely find in anything else you might reflect on."

The diagnosis

"It is no wonder we are in a time where sakīnah has been lost. It is no wonder we are in a time where diseases connected to the nerves, the soul, tension, anxiety, and depression have multiplied — from lights to lights, from screens to screens, from arguments to social-network debates, from study pressure to university pressure to job pressure to vehicle pressure to fume-from-fumes-pressure to home-design pressure..."

The bizarre architecture of the present

"I don't know whose head it even occurred to in the first place — that people would live in 100 stories, 16,000 families packed in boxed apartments stacked above each other. You leave — you don't know when you'll see the sky, when you'll see the mountains, when you'll see the stars."

The Maʿyārī inversion — what people accept and what they refuse

"Life has become so swollen [from a maʿyārī standpoint] that people will accept the most difficult things for its sake — a degree, a job, traveling to the ends of the earth. People travel to the farthest places for the sake of studying, for a certificate, for a job — they go for 6 or 7 years away from family, missing ʿEids, with no companion in dīn or millah or akhlāq or language."

"And it's accepted! 'My beloved son has work somewhere or other — my son the doctor, the engineer, etc.'"

*"But if a young man today exiles himself for the sake of seeking sharʿī ʿilm, or for daʿwah and iṣlāḥ — not for the bare vocational principle — people do not accept it."*

The piercing question

"All of this pressure and zaḥm — a question: where is the reality of death which no one will escape, the reality of eternity in Jannah or in the Fire, the reality of the Resurrection and the Reckoning — where is its position in this whole equation?"

*"If among the most important paths to akhrawī falāḥ is the sakīnah that comes into the soul — so that one may read his Lord's book with tadabbur, and may pray, and so on — what is our plan?"*

Part 12 — Practical Conclusions: How to Recover Khalwah

What this is not

"The conclusion of all this is not ʿuzlah — not complete withdrawal from the world."

What this is

"Man is the son of his reality — this reality is like a maḥtūm imposed upon us. But it is important for a person to realize his need for some breakout from this grinding wheel — and this breakout must be recurring."

Cadences that work

Capacity	Frequency
Minimum	Once a year
Modest	Once every three years (won't do — bare minimum)
Better	3 times a year
Good	5–7 times a year

"You leave, you breathe air, you reflect, you reconsider, you review your life."

A pointed observation about the avoidance of self

"Did you know that many people are afraid to review themselves — afraid to be alone with themselves? They can befriend everyone, but befriending themselves with sincerity and honesty is very hard."

"From some people's logic, the happiest thing is when nothing from inside them awakens to interrogate them. This is why you'll find some people drowning themselves in alcohol — they cannot bear sitting an entire day in silence, possibly speaking to themselves."

"What we say is the opposite: in this grinding wheel a person must extract himself, an extraction — so that some clear time becomes available with himself: to reflect, to remember Allāh, to make duʿāʾ."

Allāh's mercy via the Ten Last Nights & iʿtikāf

"From His mercy upon us, Allāh prescribed for us the worship of the Last Ten and al-iʿtikāf. This iʿtikāf realizes a great portion of this meaning — especially if it is unprogrammed. Programs are beautiful and have tarbawī benefit, but sometimes a person needs for himself, just to be alone for this purpose."

A living example — Ibn Taymiyyah

"It is mentioned that Ibn Taymiyyah used to go sometimes to abandoned mosques, pray in them, rub his face in the dust saying: 'Yā Muʿallim Ibrāhīm, ʿallimnī...' — and continue his duʿāʾ. And he used to recite the verse of the poet:

وأخرج من بين البيوت لعلني أحدّث عنك النفس في السرّ خالية"

Part 13 — The Most Accessible Khalwah: In Ṣalāh Itself

For those who cannot manage extended khalwah:

"The most important maṭlab you can demand of yourselves now, in the midst of all your work and engagement, is sakīnah."

"Sakīnah does not require long time. Make your prayer-time the time for sakīnah. Take 5 minutes before and 5 or 10 minutes after — this is easy. If you can't manage in all five prayers, make it two or three. The prayer already has shar'ī preparation-rituals."

The structure to defend

Stage	Practice
Before iqāmah	Arrive early, settle the heart
Ṣalāh	With ḥuḍūr al-qalb
After ṣalāh	The Sunnah adhkār
Then	Sit in the muṣallā for 5 minutes — "the angels keep saying 'Allāhumma ighfir lahu, Allāhumma irḥamhu' as long as you remain in your place of prayer"

Part 14 — The Concluding Exhortation: Make Ṣalāh the Supreme Matlab

The Sheikh's final teaching of the lecture — directed especially at the workers in daʿwah and iṣlāḥ:

"My hope for myself and for my brothers and sisters — especially those engaged in daʿwah, iṣlāḥ, work, occupation, immersion — is that they would make ṣalāh the ultimate end of their pursuits."

*"What have you in mind after the prayer? A lesson to give? A meeting whose outcome will open a great daʿwah door? Etc. All of these lead back to one thing: that Allāh be made One and worshipped and submitted to."*

"You are right now, in the prayer, in the most important context for realizing this ʿubūdiyyah and tawḥīd. So no matter how many demands you have — meetings, gatherings, lessons, tarbiyah, jihād in Allāh's path, and so on — these demands are aided by, lead to, and meet at the end of the road with the maqṣad of prostration to Allāh and worship of Him. So you are in the greatest of all maṭālib and its ultimate end."

*"Therefore — do not make the prayer a vehicle for everything except what it was prescribed for. Make it the most important launchpad from which you depart to your other matters. The more a person excels in his prayer, the better and purer he sets off to everything else."*

Quick-Reference Summary Table

#	Topic	Key Lesson
1	The age of 40 at biʿthah	Not arbitrary — Allāh chose it; al-Ashudd is the ascending mental + physical maturity, completing at 40.
2	Tarīkh al-biʿthah's reconciliations	al-Shaʿbī's "3 years with Isrāfīl" reconciles "10 vs 13 years at Makkah."
3	Three reports in Ibn Hishām	ʿĀʾishah's fragment, the unnamed-shaykh's stones-and-trees fragment, ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr's long story.
4	ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr's status	A kibār al-tābiʿīn whose mursal is strong; Ibn ʿUmar attended his gatherings — but still preferred to ʿĀʾishah's musnad.
5	The annual month at Ḥirāʾ	Practiced by Quraysh as tahannuth = tabarrur = remnant of ḥanīfiyyah of Ibrāhīm. Ibn Hishām's linguistic note: tahannuth ↔ tahannuf.
6	"Sleeping vs waking" reconciliation	The Sheikh leans toward tarjīḥ (ʿUbayd's mursal contains a wahm); the jamʿ view (Suhaylī, Ibn Ḥajar) — a dream-phase tawṭiʾah before yaqẓah — is also defensible.
7	ʿĀʾishah's full ḥadīth	The authoritative account: 3 ghaṭṭs, Iqraʾ, "zammilūnī," Khadījah's comfort, Warqah's recognition, "thumma fatara al-waḥy."
8	Khalwah as ẓarf li-ʿibādah	Not worship in itself — a vessel that enables tafakkur, dhikr, taʾammul.
9	The Nāshiʾat al-Layl foundation	The Qurʾān itself confirms: the day is sabḥ ṭawīl; sakīnah and tafakkur belong to the night.
10	The contemporary crisis	Modern life — its cities, vocations, screens, social networks — has structurally destroyed the human's traditional rhythm with the sky and the stars. The result: lost sakīnah, multiplied anxiety.
11	The Maʿyārī inversion	People will travel anywhere for a degree, but reject the same exile in pursuit of sharʿī ʿilm or daʿwah.
12	The recovery plan	Not ʿuzlah, but recurring breakouts (1–7 times per year), plus iʿtikāf with unprogrammed time.
13	The most accessible khalwah	Inside ṣalāh itself — arrive early, perform the adhkār, sit in the muṣallā with the angels' duʿāʾ.
14	Final exhortation	Make ṣalāh the supreme matlab — not a transit station between meetings. It is already the maqṣad you are otherwise traveling toward.

Where We Go From Here

The Sheikh ends:

"The discussion is long, mā shāʾ Allāh — we won't reach the end of the ḥadīth today. In shāʾ Allāh, we'll continue in the next session — and we'll see at that time what comes regarding the fatrat al-waḥy."

So Lecture 6 (delivered in a separate future session) will pick up where this one ended: continuing the bidʾ al-waḥy ḥadīth, the fatrat al-waḥy in depth (how long, the disputed durations, al-Shaʿbī's 3-year report reconciled with Ibn Ḥajar's reading), and the opening of the early Makkan phase.

"اللهم صلِّ على عبدك ورسولك محمد، وآتِه الوسيلة، وابعثه المقام المحمود الذي وعدته. واجعلنا من الواردين على حوضه، ومن المحيين على سنته، ومن المُحيِين بنا منهاجه، ومن المُتوفَّيْن عليها. سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك، نشهد أن لا إله إلا أنت، نستغفرك ونتوب إليك."
